Population: 64 million

Number of Ismailis: 14 000

Key Area: London

Ismailis in the UK are largely of Khoja Indian descent. The first significant migration of Gujarati Indians took place in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their numbers were added to in the 1970s when East African Indians left Kenya, Zanzibar and, most notoriously, Uganda.

Ismailis make up a little less than 1% of the south Asian population of the UK. And, although their size relative to the global Ismaili population is low, they do have a significant voice in the Ismaili community. London in particular is home to one of only six Ismaili Centres worldwide, as well as the Institute for Ismaili Studies, an academic center for the study of Shia Islam, particularly Ismailism and the promotion of Ismaili literature.
