At the time of writing 717 Muslim pilgrims had lost their lives in a tragic stampede whilst performing the Hajj.

On a day when the Muslim world remembers the mercy of God in sparing Ibrahim's son, it is simply horrific that we must also mourn the loss of so many children, parents, spouses, brothers, sisters and cousins.

Those of us at Ismaili Friends are shocked and deeply saddened at today's unimaginable tragedy. We look to our Creator for His mercy towards the injured and His comfort to all those across the world who have lost loved ones.

We will continue to pray for those buried under the weight of grief.

In the book of Lamentations (literally 'an expression of great sorrow or deep sadness) the prophet Irmiya writes

"For the Lord will not cast off forever, but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men."

As Christians we find relief in these words of Jesus:

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

We pray that all our readers, and all those who have today lost those closest to them, will find comfort in these words.
